CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF FOAM FILTERS
Congratulations, you have chosen the best air filter system available for your machine. In addition to being economical and gentle, we believe you will be pleased with the increased performance.
When to oil the foam filter:
-
Regular maintenance intervals: Oil your foam filter at regular maintenance intervals as recommended by your motorcycle manufacturer. This is usually every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but check your owner's manual for specific instructions.
-
After riding in dusty or dirty conditions: if you frequently ride in dusty or dirty conditions, such as forest roads or gravel roads, you may need to oil your foam filter more often. Dust and dirt can clog the filter and reduce its effectiveness.
-
Visual inspection: Periodically inspect your foam filter for signs of dirt buildup or discoloration. If you notice a significant build-up of dirt or the filter looks dry (note the loss of the blue coating), it's time to re-oil it. You can also tell a dry fitting by touching it with your finger, it is not "sticking".
How to oil the foam filter:
-
Clean the filter: make sure the foam filter is clean before oiling. Use mild detergent and warm water to rinse off dust and dirt. Allow the filter to dry completely before proceeding.
-
Apply filter impregnating oil: Use a high quality oil such as Bel-Ray Foam Filter Oil 1l (link here:https://eshop.throttlepunks.cz/en/bel-ray-foam-filter-oil/) specifically designed for motorcycle foam filters. Of all the oils, it has been the most successful for us, being so thick that it almost "doesn't leak".
-
TIP:Pour the oil into the bag and put the filter in it. Apply the oil evenly over the entire surface of the foam filter. Be thorough, but avoid over-wetting the filter as excess oil can restrict airflow.
-
Massage in the oil: Gently massage the oil into the foam filter, ensuring even penetration of the oil into the material. This helps ensure that the filter is properly coated and ready to trap dust and dirt.
-
5. Leave it on: Allow the filter to dry for a few minutes to allow the oil to absorb into the foam. This helps ensure optimal filtration performance.
6. Check for even coverage: after the oil has soaked in, visually inspect the filter for dry spots or areas where the oil is unevenly distributed. If necessary, apply additional oil to ensure complete coverage.
Why oiling is important:
-
Maintains performance: oiling the foam filter ensures that the filter retains its ability to effectively trap dust, small particles and other debris that could enter your motorcycle's engine.
-
Prevents damage: A properly oiled filter provides essential protection for your engine by preventing abrasive particles from damaging internal components.
-
Optimizes airflow: Properly oiled filters allow for optimal airflow, ensuring that your engine receives the oxygen it needs for combustion. This can help improve performance and fuel efficiency.
-
Extends filter life: Regularly oiling your foam filter helps extend its life, reducing the frequency of filter changes and saving you money in the long run.
TIP: If you don't have the time (or the desire to get your hands dirty) or you're about to take your bike on its next journey, get a replacement oiled filter from us (depending on your bike). We sell all foam filters pre-oiled.Thanks for your cooperation
